Voice Box 2: medicine needs everyone

CMVM Communications - University of Edinburgh Episode 2

Medicine is often considered an elite profession - according to the British Medical Journal, only 4% of doctors in the UK are from a working class background.

"Widening participation" programmes in universities are seeking to address the imbalance and actively encourage people from all backgrounds to consider a career in medicine.

So what are the barriers facing prospective medical students today?  And do these obstacles persist beyond graduation and into professional life?

Joana Rodrigues, Year 4 medical student and Mentorship Director at In2MedSchool, hosts a lively discussion with two Edinburgh clinicians, both of whom were the first in their families to go to university.

Featuring:

  • Dr Shahida Din, Consultant Gastroenterologist, Western General Hospital, Edinburgh.
  • Dr Gilly Flemming, Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine, NHS Lothian.

Voice Box theme music by medical student Alex Lewthwaite.
